The Aporia
The annual flu season is starting earlier than usual, with signs of activity appearing as early as September 2023, typically months before its usual October or November onset. Epidemiologist Caitlin Rivers from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health notes that the number of people testing positive for the flu and seeking emergency department care due to influenza has been rising in Western states like California, Washington, Hawaii, and Alaska since early September. This is unusual, as flu activity usually begins in Southern states before spreading northward. The CDC also reports an uptick in emergency room visits related to the virus, indicating that this year's flu season could be particularly concerning.
