At least 5 people were killed and 8 others injured when an Amazon cargo plane crashed at Miami International Airport on Sunday. The plane, which was operated by 21 Air, overran the runway while attempting to land from San Juan, Puerto Rico, and struck several vehicles before bursting into flames. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it would investigate the crash.
According to officials, the plane hit multiple vehicles near the 2100 block of Northwest 42nd Avenue, with some people trapped inside their cars. More than 60 firefighters responded to the scene, using foam and specialized airport firefighting units to put out the blaze.
The incident forced a 3-hour ground stop at the airport as emergency crews worked to extinguish the fire and assess the status of those affected. Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said in a statement that the company was "heartbroken" over the loss of life.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has assembled a team to investigate the crash, which is believed to have occurred around 2 p.m. ET on Sunday.
