A spokesman for France's interior ministry, which earlier estimated that more than 250,000 people took to the streets to protest today, said: 'There have been 6,1000 arrests, 1483 of them minors, since the protests began three weeks ago.'

Shocking images from Paris showed riots, many donning balaclavas and masks, setting alight bins, letting off flares and climbing on statues this afternoon as riots went out of control.

At the Place de la Nation, one of the city's most iconic squares, local police officers told reporters that gangs are 'trying to attack us' constantly.

Such scenes are however far from confined to the streets of the French capital.
In Rennes, police were pictured using waters cannons in a bid to ease the chaos ensuing on the country's streets.

It comes less than 24 hours after a 15-year-old schoolboy lost his left hand when a police grenade exploded in Lens, around 150 miles from Paris.

Protestors are calling for an end to the country's substandard school conditions, with thousands complaining of missing teachers, overloaded timetables, dilapidated classrooms and buildings that cannot copy with rising temperatures.

Green leader Marine Tondelier spoke in front of a high school in Lens – the city where the teenager's hand was blown off by a stun grenade on Monday – saying: 'All political families together should have this concern to allow our young people, those who wish to do so, to express their demands in safety.'
Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu's office has called for 'peaceful' gatherings, calling for a return to 'a structured, legal and democratic form of opposition'.
He has also ordered government officials to tackle the students' main demands, including ensuring absent teachers are replaced, reviewing the length of the 8am to 6pm school day and the need for longer lunch breaks.
