The Aporia
August Hanning, who served as president of Germany's Federal Intelligence Service (BND) from 1998 to 2005, was arrested on suspicion of espionage and attempted treason. Along with him, his former aide Manfred D was also detained in Steinfurt for aiding the alleged crimes. Hanning is accused of using classified documents provided by Manfred D to draft analyses for a foreign intelligence service and passing top-secret information over nearly two decades. The pair are suspected of exchanging around 2,000 documents, many containing confidential material meant exclusively for BND internal use. Though it's unclear which country the foreign service represents, prosecutors allege that Hanning used the documents in private consulting work after leaving government service. Both men were arrested following an investigation linked to a separate case involving businesswoman Christina Block’s child abduction in Denmark.
