The Aporia
Oprah Winfrey announced her latest book club pick on "CBS Mornings", marking the 30th anniversary of her influential book club. The selection is Amanda Rizkalla's debut novel, titled "Hungered," which was published in May. Set in a world where poverty and family strife are prevalent, the story follows 12-year-old Sofia, who lives with her mother and younger brother in their car while her mother searches for stable housing each night. Oprah praised Rizkalla's work as a “riveting novel” about families living unhoused, highlighting their hopes, dreams, and resilience.
Rizkalla, now 28 years old and originally from Los Angeles, studied at Stanford University and earned her Master of Fine Arts in creative writing from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She received a surprise call from Oprah herself to inform her about being chosen for the book club, an honor she describes as surreal.
