The Aporia
Norma Bowe, a registered nurse and professor from Minnesota, operated a mobile clinic outside Delaney Hall, an immigration detention center in Newark, New Jersey, offering free health services to undocumented immigrants since the start of the 2020 pandemic. On Memorial Day weekend, while assessing a hyperventilating child who was anxious about her father's detainment inside, she encountered around two dozen ICE agents outside the clinic. When Norma approached what she thought was someone in need of medical assistance, an ICE officer threw her to the ground, causing visible injuries and damaging her stethoscope. The incident was recorded on video. Norma has since sought justice for this assault; the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed more than 50 legal claims across 17 states including Norma's case against federal immigration agents.
An ICE officer flung her to the ground while she was still wearing her stethoscope.
Earlier this year, the ACLU filed more than 50 legal claims across 17 states on behalf of people harmed by federal immigration agents.
