The Aporia
Tens of thousands protesters marched in Barcelona on Monday to demand affordable housing, following Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's call for snap elections on November 29. The march turned violent as some demonstrators set fires and hurled objects at police, leading to the arrest of 13 people, including a minor. Police reported that nearly 30 officers were injured during the clashes. The protests came after parliament rejected emergency housing measures proposed by Sánchez's government, which included rent control laws aimed at easing the affordability crisis. Housing has become a critical issue in Spain due to high rents and a shortage of homes, with trade unions planning a general strike this autumn to address the issue.
The demonstration later turned tense, as some participants threw objects at police and set rubbish bins on fire.
People of all ages took part, with demonstrators calling for political action.
