The Aporia
The Conservative Party announced plans at their annual conference to build a £10bn air defence system called "Britannia Shield," inspired by Israel’s Iron Dome, which is designed to intercept short-range threats like rockets and missiles. The system would include advanced radar, command and control systems, interceptor missiles, and counter-drone capabilities over the next decade. Shadow Defence Secretary James Cartlidge described this as Britain's most significant military upgrade since the Cold War, citing current threats from Russia and Iran. However, Labour criticized the Conservatives for their past record on national security during their 14 years in power. The new system aims to protect critical infrastructure, military bases, and sovereign territories but faces skepticism over its necessity given the UK’s existing defence strategy focused on deterrence rather than direct missile defense.
