The Aporia
On October 24, David Eby, leader of the British Columbia NDP, promised to introduce a new tax bracket targeting individuals earning over $1 million annually if re-elected. Announced during his campaign in Comox on Vancouver Island, this proposal aims to fund health care by taxing those high earners at a rate of 24.5% for income above the threshold. Currently, the highest tax bracket is 20.5%, and Eby's plan would also increase rates for the two existing top brackets. According to the NDP, these changes will impact less than 4% of British Columbia's taxpayers, affecting only income earned over each tax bracket level. The announcement drew criticism from provincial Conservatives who fear it could drive professionals like doctors out of the province.
The B.C. Conservatives are criticizing the New Democrats’ proposed tax policies on the campaign trail, saying they would drive doctors out of the province.
