The Aporia
In September 2023, Housewife May and her three children moved into a 200 sq ft subdivided flat in Kwai Tsing, a district known for having one of the lowest average monthly household incomes in Hong Kong. For years, they lived in cramped conditions, including a squatter hut with no proper sanitation and a tiny 100 sq ft subdivided flat. The new apartment offers some improvements like windows, two partitioned bedrooms, a dining room, a toilet, and a kitchen, but the family still struggles financially, paying HK$8,300 in rent with government assistance of around HK$17,000 monthly. Activists warn that while efforts to eliminate substandard housing are commendable, they may be inadvertently displacing vulnerable families into even harder situations.
Is Hong Kong’s drive to eliminate substandard housing doing more harm than good?
