The Aporia
The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is exploring an expansion in the Northern Metropolis university town to boost its research capacity and attract more talent. Professor Anderson Shum Ho-cheung, who became HKU’s vice-president for research in August, highlighted the need for additional laboratory space, particularly dry and wet labs, which are crucial for advanced research activities.
Shum emphasized that securing this extra space is essential as it will enable HKU to compete effectively with other institutions globally. He also stressed the importance of increased government funding to support grant applications, noting that the financial benefits from such grants can take time to materialize but are necessary for long-term growth and development.
The expansion plans align with the Hong Kong government's strategy outlined in its policy address, which aims to integrate education, technology, industry, and talent to accelerate the development of the Northern Metropolis. Shum described a closed-loop research model where discoveries move from the laboratory to industry and back, fostering an environment that encourages breakthroughs, partnerships, and the creation of start-ups.
