In June, Italian researchers used artificial intelligence to virtually unfurl and interpret a papyrus scroll that was damaged in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius nearly 2,000 years ago. The scroll, written in Greek, discusses Stoic philosophy and would have been extremely fragile if physically unrolled. This achievement is part of the Vesuvius Challenge, launched by University of Kentucky computer scientist Brent Seales in 2023, which offers cash prizes to researchers who successfully use AI to decipher ancient scrolls. The success has left even the challenge's creator, Seales, feeling triumphant, likening it to winning the "World Cup".
