The Aporia
Bruce Baird, a respected Liberal politician in Australia, has died at the age of 84. Baird played significant roles both in federal and state politics. He served as a member for the now-abolished NSW seat of Northcott from 1984 to 1995 before representing the federal electorate of Cook from 1998 until his retirement in 2007, paving the way for Scott Morrison to later win the seat. Baird was instrumental in securing Sydney's bid for the 2000 Olympic Games, serving as minister for tourism, roads, environment, and transport during this time.
Baird is also known for his family connections; he is the father of former NSW Premier Mike Baird (served 2014-2017) and journalist Julia Baird. He was a devoted member of the "Bold & Beautiful" swim squad in Sydney, where he was described as a “much-loved” community figure by his peers. His colleagues remember him for his strong sense of service and compassion, earning respect across political lines.
