The Aporia
Britain’s competition watchdog has approved E.On's acquisition of rival energy supplier Ovo, paving the way for the creation of the UK's largest electricity provider. The deal was initially under scrutiny to ensure it would not reduce market competition. Announced in May, with reports suggesting a price tag of up to £600 million, the merger will combine Ovo’s four million customers with E.On’s existing 5.6 million users, expected to finalize by year-end. Founded in 2009 by Stephen Fitzpatrick, Ovo has since grown significantly and invested in technology for sustainable energy use. However, the company faced increasing financial pressure due to heightened regulatory requirements and changes in market expectations, prompting a strategic review that led to the sale process.
