The Aporia
In Pennsylvania, health officials reported a fifth measles-related death on September 30, 2026, with the deceased being an unvaccinated resident of Lancaster County. This brings the total number of measles-linked deaths in the state since August to five. The ongoing outbreak has led to 943 confirmed cases of measles across 39 counties, resulting in around 176 hospitalizations and at least six congenitally infected babies born this year. Two infants, an 18-year-old from Mifflin County, and a 40-year-old woman from Jefferson County have also died due to measles complications. Nationwide, the U.S. has reported over 3,569 confirmed cases of measles in 2026, marking its worst year for the disease since 1991. The lack of vaccination remains a critical factor; all reported deaths involved individuals who were unvaccinated or too young to receive vaccines.
