The Aporia
Argentine President Javier Milei threatened to take legal action against the UK over a disputed offshore oilfield project near the Falkland Islands, escalating tensions between the two countries. Milei’s office gave Britain a two-week ultimatum to halt operations at the Sea Lion oilfield, being developed by Israel’s Navitas Petroleum and the UK’s Rockhopper Exploration, or face international arbitration. The oil project is located in waters claimed by Argentina as part of its sovereignty dispute with the UK over the Falkland Islands, which are controlled by Britain. If the UK does not comply, Argentina plans to request a temporary halt to the project from the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg, Germany. The companies involved assert they have valid licenses issued by the British government, while Milei accused the UK of “illegally plundering” resources and causing “irreversible and irreparable” damage.
