The Aporia
In September 2023, Daniel Graham and Adam Carruthers illegally cut down the iconic Sycamore Gap tree along Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland, sparking national outrage. Three years later, the stump is showing encouraging signs of recovery with a thick ring of new shoots growing around it. The National Trust fenced off the area to monitor its regeneration and implemented special measures such as reducing soil compaction and limiting human disturbance. General manager Andrew Poad said these efforts are paying off and expressed hope for the tree’s future, emphasizing that careful monitoring will continue based on how it develops.
