A 30-year-old man was fatally shot by police on the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City early Friday morning, after he climbed onto the bridge's cables and approached officers with a knife extended. According to NYPD officials, a 911 call came in at 3:28am reporting a man walking on the bridge beams. Officers from the Emergency Service Unit (ESU) responded and attempted to establish a verbal dialogue with the man, but he became aggressive, telling them "I want you to kill me" and claiming he had a bomb. Despite trying to convince him to come down safely for almost an hour, the officers were unable to move quickly enough to avoid being approached by the man. When he began to climb down a cable towards them, they opened fire, resulting in his death. The bridge was closed and traffic was disrupted as police investigated the incident.
