The Aporia
On Saturday night, a vessel carrying more than 50 fish traders capsized near Idjwi Island in Lake Kivu, South Kivu province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The incident left at least 12 dead and dozens missing. Félix Habiragi, chief of the village of Kisheke close to where the accident occurred, stated that rescue efforts managed to save about 15 people but could not account for many others. Videos from the scene showed villagers pulling bodies out of the lake. Boat accidents are frequent in DRC due to rivers and lakes being a crucial mode of transport for over 100 million people, with vessels often overloaded with goods and passengers, leading to such tragic outcomes.
