The Aporia
Sheri Mecklenburg, a federal prosecutor in Chicago, resigned from her position at the Department of Justice this week after facing accusations of misconduct related to the Broadview Six case. The case involved six protesters arrested outside an ICE facility as part of Operation Midway Blitz in 2025, who were charged with felony conspiracy and misdemeanor obstruction. Mecklenburg wrote a letter accusing U.S. Attorney Andrew Boutros of directing the prosecution that ultimately ended her career. She claimed Boutros and his office withheld information about misconduct allegations from her and her attorneys, preventing her from adequately defending herself. The case collapsed after the alleged misconduct came to light, with charges being dismissed before a trial could take place. Mecklenburg cited her retirement under protest as necessary to protect her healthcare benefits earned through decades of government service, which would have been lost if she had been fired instead.
