Nvidia, a leading chipmaker, has agreed to buy Hugging Face, a popular AI company, for $12.9 billion in a move that expands its capabilities beyond hardware and into the artificial intelligence space. The acquisition is part of a larger trend of companies rushing to acquire open models atop the AI stack. Hugging Face has seen significant growth, with 18 million users, and provides an open-source platform for collaborative machine learning. Despite concerns raised by a hacking incident earlier this year, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has stated that Hugging Face will remain an open platform for the entire AI ecosystem. This deal marks the second-largest acquisition for Nvidia, following a $20 billion non-exclusive agreement with chipmaker Groq in December and a $6 billion structured agreement with Poolside, an open-weight model builder, last month.
