A flash flood hit the Grand Canyon on Saturday afternoon, August 29, leaving one person dead and at least 15 others missing or unaccounted for. The body of a 46-year-old man was recovered near Crystal Rapids along the Colorado River in northern Arizona. The flooding occurred in Bright Angel Canyon and Phantom Ranch area around 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, forcing dozens of people to evacuate and damaging the sole water pipeline serving the park. As of Sunday morning, 62 people had been evacuated from Phantom Ranch and the lower North Kaibab Trail, with others scheduled for later. The National Park Service is asking anyone who knows of hikers or backpackers in the affected area to provide information.
