The Aporia
In late May, F-35 fighter jet parts intended for shipment from Australia to the United States were unexpectedly diverted to Hong Kong, raising security concerns. The Pentagon’s F-35 Joint Program Office confirmed it is aware of this incident and is working with US authorities and industry partners to retrieve the missing components, investigate the diversion, and implement safeguards to prevent future occurrences.
The shipment included a cockpit canopy and weapons-bay door coated with radar-absorbing material, enhancing stealth capabilities. According to reports, these parts were seized by the Chinese government after they landed in Hong Kong while en route via South Korea from Australia. Despite attempts to retrieve them, their current location remains unknown.
Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles stated that there was no evidence of sensitive equipment being lost and assured that an investigation into the incident is underway with the assistance of Lockheed Martin and US officials. The potential exposure of advanced military technology has sparked concern over China's access to classified F-35 components, given its adversarial stance towards the U.S. and its allies.
