The Aporia
Health Canada suspended the licence of a Grifols plasma collection site in Winnipeg, Canada, following a critical inspection. The suspension comes after the death of Rodiyat Alabede, a 22-year-old university student who experienced cardiac issues during a donation at the Grifols site on Taylor Avenue last October and later died in hospital. Although Health Canada stated there was "no linkage" between her death and the donation activity, her family has asked for an investigation. The company voluntarily stopped plasma collection across Canada on August 14, citing the need to implement improvements to address regulatory concerns. Grifols is the sole major commercial collector of plasma in Canada, which is used to manufacture medicines. Health Canada had previously identified compliance issues at the Taylor Avenue location, prompting the suspension.
