On September 21, a 22-year-old worker named Andrea Moretti fell to his death while installing new lights at the Colosseum in Rome, Italy. The incident occurred overnight when he was working at high altitude using rope access techniques. Despite emergency services' efforts, Moretti succumbed to his injuries, prompting the closure of part of the iconic structure on September 21 and a full-day shutdown announced by Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli as a mark of mourning.
The Colosseum, which attracts millions of visitors annually, was partially closed initially but faced protests from Italy's largest union, CGIL. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed deep sadness over the tragedy. All construction and maintenance work at the site has been suspended pending further investigation into the circumstances surrounding Moretti’s accident.
This incident is particularly poignant as it follows another fatal workplace accident near the Colosseum less than a year ago, where a Romanian worker was trapped under rubble from a collapsed medieval tower.
