On Sunday, September 13, a ferry named Virgo Transport 8 capsized in severe weather conditions in the Java Sea off the coast of Indonesia, leaving about 130 people missing after carrying more than 240 passengers and crew from Surabaya in East Java to Banjarmasin on Borneo Island. At least 107 people were rescued and six bodies recovered as rescue teams battled waves up to 3 meters (9.8 feet) high. The ship’s captain had reported rough seas before issuing a distress call, indicating the vessel was listing heavily.
Rescue operations involved deploying eight vessels, including naval ships and helicopters, from Banjarmasin's Search and Rescue Office in response to the incident. Indonesian Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi confirmed that while the ferry had capsized, it had not sunk based on observations by helicopter crews, but officials were still investigating whether natural conditions, technical issues, or human error caused the disaster.
