The Aporia
On Friday, the Yankees designated utility player Oswaldo Cabrera for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for Clarke Schmidt. Two days later, Cabrera was claimed off waivers by the Reds, marking the end of his tenure with the Yankees after playing in 305 games since his debut in 2017. At 27 years old and batting .288 with a .790 OPS in 122 games at Triple-A this season, Cabrera was expected to attract interest from other teams due to his minor league option remaining for next year. Known for his versatility across multiple positions including third base, second base, first base, shortstop, and outfield roles, as well as his positive attitude, Cabrera’s career was notably derailed by a broken ankle sustained during a slide in Seattle last season. His departure left many teammates disappointed, despite efforts from manager Aaron Boone to keep him on the team if possible.
