Temple Israel, a prominent synagogue in Detroit, Michigan, was attacked on March 12 when a 41-year-old man crashed his truck packed with fireworks and gasoline into the building. The FBI classified it as a "targeted act of violence against the Jewish community." Although more than 140 people took shelter during the attack, only the attacker died; however, significant damage was inflicted on the temple's relics and sanctuary. The synagogue has now been restored at an estimated cost of over $40 million, plus additional security upgrades. In a poignant return, Temple Israel reopened for Rosh Hashanah in early October, six months after the incident. Rabbi Jennifer Kaluzny highlighted that they would commemorate "the great miracle" that saved lives on that fateful day for generations to come.
