Simon Peter Carman, a 45-year-old Australian truck driver from Perth's southern suburbs, appeared in Pattaya Provincial Court on September 16 to face charges for the alleged murder of Tunchanok Donhomla, a 17-year-old Thai teenager also known as "Cake." Carman pleaded not guilty to all four charges: intentional murder, concealing a body, and two sexual offenses involving a minor. The court denied his bail request due to concerns over flight risk.
Donhomla was last seen alive walking with Carman in the foyer of his condo complex on June 25 at about 3 AM. Her naked body was found stuffed into a black suitcase near railway tracks outside Pattaya two days later, less than 150 kilometers south of Bangkok. Police believe Donhomla died from suffocation.
Carman was arrested in Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi International Airport just before boarding a Jetstar flight back to Perth on June 27. He claimed that the teen attacked him with a knife during an argument over money and he acted in self-defense, though prosecutors dispute this account. The next court appearance is set for October 12.
The case highlights concerns about sex tourism in Pattaya, a popular tourist destination known for its nightlife and beaches but also notorious for its sex trade.
