Sudan’s displacement crisis deepens as violence escalates

More than 200,000 people have been newly displaced in Sudan's Kordofan region due to fighting that intensified late last year, according to the United Nations. The UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM) warned of a dire situation, with critical water and electricity infrastructure being targeted by drone attacks in the city of el-Obeid. This is just one part of Sudan's larger displacement crisis, which has already seen 14 million people forced from their homes and at least 59,000 killed since 2023. The conflict between Sudan's army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continues to worsen, with thousands more families fleeing to cities like el-Obeid in search of safety. As a result, families are facing not only violence but also loss of access to basic necessities like water, electricity, and healthcare, as well as the added burden of seasonal flooding in nearby states. The UN has described the situation as "impossible to ignore," with IOM Director General Amy Pope warning that this crisis threatens an entire generation's future.
