Sudan’s displacement crisis deepens as violence escalates

More than 200,000 people have been displaced in Sudan's Kordofan region due to intense fighting since last year, according to the United Nations' International Organization for Migration (IOM). The conflict has also targeted critical infrastructure such as water and electricity in el-Obeid, the biggest city in the region. Seasonal flooding in nearby North Darfur state has further compounded the displacement crisis, with 59,000 people killed and 14 million forced from their homes since 2023. The fighting is between Sudan's army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which have attacked villages across the region, causing thousands of families to flee to cities like el-Obeid. The IOM has warned that the crisis threatens an entire generation's future, with families losing access to basic necessities like water, electricity, and healthcare.
