Alberta man sentenced to 12 years in sex assaults

Richard Robert Mantha, 62, from Calgary, received a 12-year prison sentence for sexually assaulting vulnerable women at his rural property near Chestermere between 2019 and 2023. The judge sentenced him to six years less than five years and three months credit for time already served, leaving Mantha with about seven more years in prison. He was convicted of six offences: three sexual assaults, one involving drugging a victim, and uttering threats against another woman. Justice Judith Shriar noted that Mantha showed "callous disrespect" by laughing when a terrified victim fled his property. The trial faced delays due to Mantha firing previous lawyers and having health issues like a stroke. One victim, Aimee Ert, testified about being drugged, choked, and sexually assaulted after agreeing to go with Mantha to his acreage.
