On Tuesday evening in Los Angeles, a NBC4 and Telemundo 52 news helicopter crashed while covering an earlier accident involving a bus and SUV, killing three people including reporter Eliana Moreno and pilot George Marciniw. The crash occurred in the Chatsworth neighborhood around 7pm local time. Witnesses reported that the helicopter exploded upon impact, damaging four cars nearby. Moreno and Marciniw had been working together since 2023 and flew hundreds of hours together. Additionally, a pedestrian was also killed at the scene. The SUV driver suspected of causing the initial bus crash faces charges including reckless driving and possible DUI. NBC LA's Chopper 4 involved in the fatal accident is a Eurocopter AS 350 B2 Ecureuil, part of a helicopter family with recent fatal incidents, raising concerns about its safety record.
