Harwinder Singh, 35, and Riya Riya, 23, both from Brampton, Canada, were arrested on August 12 by the Peel Regional Police for allegedly extorting $6,000 from a victim during an online date. The victim was contacted in July through an online messaging platform by someone using the username "Manisha Sharma" and agreed to meet at a basement apartment. A male suspect entered the apartment after the victim arrived and threatened them into transferring the money via e-transfer. The suspects face charges of forcible confinement, extortion, robbery, and uttering threats. Both were held in custody pending bail hearings at the Ontario Court of Justice. Police believe there may be additional victims who were also targeted through online dates, and are urging anyone with similar experiences to come forward.
