In February 2025, President Donald Trump announced his intention to address what he perceived as "woke" cultural issues at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., by taking control of the institution. However, in May 2026, a federal judge ruled that renaming the center after Trump was illegal. Despite this ruling, Trump’s supporters on the board argue that restoring his name is crucial to avoid the center's imminent bankruptcy and closure as early as Tuesday.
The Kennedy Center, which operates with a mix of taxpayer funding and private donations, faces significant financial challenges after Trump’s controversial actions drove away donors, performers, and audiences. The board has proposed 10 different ways to add Trump’s name back onto the building’s facade, ranging from variations like "Renovation Restoration and Endowment overseen by President Donald J. Trump" to simply acknowledging his "generosity."
Critics, including Ohio Representative Joyce Beatty and her legal team, argue that these efforts are transparent attempts to circumvent a court order banning any formal recognition of Trump on the building. The institution’s precarious financial situation underscores how Trump's interference has severely damaged its sustainability and reputation within the arts community.
