A new study from The Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences reveals a significant increase in gambling-related emergency department visits in Ontario, particularly among boys and men aged 10 to 44. The research, published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, analyzed data from January 2012 to September 2025 and found that these visits have doubled since the expansion of online gambling and legalization of single-event sports betting by the federal government in August 2021. Among males aged 10 to 29, there was a 154% higher number of gambling-related ER visits than expected, while for those aged 30 to 44, it was 116% higher. No significant changes were observed among females during the study period.
