The Aporia
China has developed a leading weather forecasting system using 100,000 home-grown AI chips, according to the China Meteorological Administration and Sugon, a Beijing-based computing company. The new Sugon 8,000 system can predict weather conditions up to 10 days in advance, with a resolution of 5km (3.1 miles), which is finer than most major systems worldwide. Major global forecasting models typically have resolutions ranging from 5km to 10km; for example, the Global Forecast System operated by the US National Weather Service has a maximum resolution of about 13km. This advancement puts China at the forefront in weather prediction technology, aligning with its ambitious goals in this field.
