Syrian security forces arrested Lieutenant Colonel Musab Abu Rukba, a former Assad-era officer, in the city of Nawa in Daraa province. Abu Rukba was convicted by a Vienna court last month of bodily harm, aggravated coercion, and sexual assault against detainees who opposed former President Bashar al-Assad while he headed the police's criminal investigations department in Raqqa over a decade ago. He had fled Austria after being sentenced to eight years in prison, but returned to his hometown in southern Syria earlier this month. Abu Rukba had pleaded not guilty to the charges, which occurred when he was still in office. The arrest was made by internal security forces in coordination with the counter-terrorism department.
