Sheila Williams from Golden Cross in East Sussex has taken on an extra job as a waitress to cover her increased heating costs. Her heating oil bill has nearly doubled since early 2026, forcing her to seek additional income to afford it. The UK government announced £53m in support for vulnerable households reliant on heating oil and removed a 4% tariff on home heating oil. However, Williams remains upset despite the measures. In Sussex, thousands of homes not connected to gas mains rely solely on oil, with some residents unable to afford their bills at all. A household filling a 1,000-litre tank could face a bill of over £970. Jon Reardon from Rye Oil notes that heating oil prices have doubled since the start of the Middle Eastern conflict, affecting approximately 15,000 residents in south-east England.
