On November 5, 2026, at around 6:30 p.m., a Colorado police officer was killed and three others were wounded during a confrontation with a suspect near an RTD bus in Lakewood, approximately 5 miles west of downtown Denver. The shooting occurred after officers responded to a report about a suspicious person who may have been involved in a hit-and-run earlier that day.
When the Lakewood Police Department officers arrived, the suspect opened fire immediately upon their approach, leading to an exchange of gunfire during which the suspect was also killed at the scene. A civilian sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital; however, the nature and extent of all victims' injuries remain undisclosed by police officials as of now.
Lakewood Police Public Information Officer John Romero provided details about the incident and extended condolences to the family of the deceased officer during a press conference. Governor Jared Polis expressed his sorrow over the loss of life in the line of duty, emphasizing the sacrifice made by law enforcement personnel daily for public safety.
