On November 6, 2026, Macao's Court of First Instance sentenced former pro-democracy lawmaker Au Kam San to 12½ years in prison. This was the first conviction under Macao’s national security law since its enactment in 2009 and widened in 2023. Au, who served as a lawmaker for two decades until 2021, faced charges including subversion of state power and breach of confidentiality. The court found him guilty on five out of seven charges but acquitted him of two counts related to collusion with foreign organizations. His arrest and trial raised concerns about the fairness of judicial processes in Macao.
Au’s arrest last year was the first publicly known prosecution under Macao’s national security law since it was enacted in 2009.
A Macao court found him guilty of subverting state power, breach of confidentiality and establishing contact with organizations, groups or people outside Macao to commit acts endangering national security.
