Manny Rutinel, a Democrat, won Colorado's Eighth Congressional District seat on November 7, 2026, unseating Republican incumbent Gabe Evans. Rutinel's victory was not as close as predicted; he led by 15.4 points with 81% of the vote counted when the race was called shortly before 11 p.m. The district had previously voted for President Donald Trump in the 2024 election but supported Governor Jared Polis and a full Democratic slate in the 2022 midterms. Rutinel, known for his past criticism of ranching and oil industries—industries that generated roughly $1.2 billion in revenue for Colorado in 2022—shifted his stance to appeal to more moderate voters as he campaigned, distancing himself from his previous activism against these industries.
Rutinel, a former anti-meat and anti-oil crusader who went great lengths to distance himself from his activist past
attacks that continued until just months before launching his congressional bid, and pushed left-wing legislation while serving in the state legislature.
Rutinel spoke at a convention hosted by the Animal Legal Defense Fund, a group that aims to give animals equal rights as humans and once filed a negligence lawsuit on behalf of an American quarter horse.
