As of November 5, 2026, severe thunderstorms caused catastrophic flash flooding in McCaysville, Georgia, and Copperhill, Tennessee, straddling the state line. The storms dropped up to 8 to 10 inches of rain, causing the Toccoa River to overflow and the Ocoee River to rise to a record 18 feet, submerging buildings to their rooflines. Emergency responders conducted over 30 water rescues and evacuated dozens of residents as both cities declared states of emergency. Schools in Polk County, Tennessee, were closed for Thursday due to flooding dangers. The National Weather Service issued flash flood warnings for the area, with officials urging people to stay away from downtown areas near the river.
