As of November 5, 2026, 3,000 tarantulas were seized at Jorge Chavez International Airport in Callao, Peru. The spiders, ranging from eggs to adult stages, were hidden inside socks within the luggage of three travelers: two German nationals and one Polish national who were preparing to board a flight to Germany. Authorities received an anonymous tip that led them to search the suitcases. Each suitcase contained between 15 to 22 socks packed with tarantulas of different species and developmental stages. Cora Suarez, a wildlife forestry control technician with SERFOR (Peru’s National Forestry and Wildlife Service), noted that these spiders can be valuable due to their colors and sizes, appealing to collectors. The travelers were detained by Peru's environmental crimes police for attempting to smuggle the tarantulas illegally.
