Paraguay's President Santiago Peña resigned on Thursday after Ueno Bank, one of the country’s largest digital lenders with ties to his government, collapsed and left 60% of Paraguay's adult population unable to access their bank accounts. The collapse triggered widespread protests across Paraguay and impeachment proceedings against Peña, who cited the need for "stability, social peace, and democratic institutions" in his resignation message posted on X (formerly Twitter). Prior to resigning, Peña had faced mounting pressure from opposition lawmakers demanding his removal following the financial crisis. The central bank chief, Carlos Carvallo, also resigned after Ueno was placed into resolution by the country’s central bank, raising questions about regulatory oversight and potential conflicts of interest.
His resignation came after Paraguay's lower house of congress voted in favour of pursuing an impeachment trial.
