Francis Kaufmann, a 47-year-old American from California, was sentenced to life in prison by an Italian court in Rome on November 5, 2026, for the murder of his Russian partner Anastasia Trofimova, 28, and their 11-month-old daughter Andromeda. The bodies were discovered in Villa Pamphili park in Rome in June 2025, with Trofimova's body found under a black bag several days before the infant's.
Prosecutors argued that Kaufmann killed Trofimova first and then carried their child to the park an hour later without returning her. CCTV footage supported this sequence of events, showing Kaufmann entering and exiting the park without the baby. After the murders, Kaufmann fled to Skiathos, a Greek island, before being extradited back to Italy for trial.
Despite his defense attorney's claim that there was insufficient direct evidence linking Kaufmann to the killings, the court found him guilty based on circumstantial evidence and sentenced him to life imprisonment, including an additional three years.
