A Finnish court convicted the captain and a crew member of the Russian cargo ship Fitburg on November 5, sentencing them for damaging telecommunications cables in the Gulf of Finland last year. The captain was sentenced to three years and six months in prison, while the crew member received two years and ten months. On December 31, 2022, Finland seized the vessel as it sailed from Russia to Israel, suspecting it had damaged undersea cables connecting Helsinki to Estonia by dragging its anchor over an area spanning about 130km. Both defendants denied wrongdoing and contested Finland's jurisdiction in the case. Finland has increased security measures for its underwater infrastructure following several incidents since 2022, including a vessel-boarding drill conducted in September.
