South Africans began voting on November 1, 2026, in local government elections that were seen as a critical test for the ruling African National Congress (ANC). The election, marked by voter discontent over poor service delivery, infrastructure issues, and corruption, resulted in early counts showing the ANC narrowly leading but with a significantly reduced share of the vote. As of November 5, with only preliminary results from populous areas like Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal available, the Democratic Alliance (DA) was trailing closely behind. Over 29.2 million people registered to vote in these elections, aiming to determine control over more than 250 municipalities, which are responsible for essential services such as water, sanitation, and refuse collection. The results could lead to a shift towards coalition governance in many cities, impacting the national political landscape and the ANC's long-standing dominance since the end of apartheid.
