On October 31, 2026, Cindy Bowers (68) and her husband Anthony Beringer (59) died while kayaking on the Lower Salt River in Arizona. The couple was found dead after their inflatable kayak capsized; neither was wearing life jackets. Reports indicate that Beringer yelled for help when his wife, who could not swim, fell into the water. Emergency responders received a report at 1:34 p.m., but by the time they arrived, the couple had vanished. Bowers' body was recovered at around 2:11 p.m., and Beringer's about an hour later upstream. The incident occurred as the Salt River Project released higher-than-normal water levels due to heavy rainfall, creating dangerous conditions. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office warned the public to stay away from the river and exercise caution in such weather conditions.
