Adam Hamilton, a Democrat and megachurch pastor, became the first member of his party elected to the U.S. Senate in Kansas since 1932 on November 3, defeating incumbent Republican Senator Roger Marshall. This historic win came after recent polls showed a narrowing gap between the candidates, prompting Republicans to divert resources from other swing-state races like North Carolina’s. Hamilton's campaign highlighted economic issues such as rising fuel and fertilizer prices affecting farmers, and resonated with independent voters and some moderate Republicans. The race was closely watched due to its potential impact on control of the Senate; however, Marshall faced criticism over a lawsuit filed by former patients for unpaid medical bills, which Hamilton used in his campaign attacks.
Hamilton, a minister at the largest Methodist congregation in the country, has never held public office and was registered as a Republican until earlier this year.
Despite Kansas’ conservative history, it became a key battleground in the final stretch of the race. Amid growing backlash to Trump’s handling of the economy, Republican outside groups were forced to divert millions of dollars to boost Marshall.
Hamilton and his allies hit Marshall, 66, on the high prices that resulted from the Iran war and Trump’s tariff agenda, as well as on the health care cuts in the “big, beautiful bill” Republicans enacted last year.
Rising diesel fuel and beef prices hit Kansas’ agricultural economy particularly hard.
