Disneyland has decided to replace the gas-powered engines in its Autopia ride with electric ones ahead of a forthcoming California mandate on vehicle emissions. The decision comes after the park paid a $56,000 settlement to the California Air Resources Board in 2024 for operating cars without certified emissions controls. Since its debut at Disneyland in 1955, Autopia has used gas-powered Honda four-stroke engines with an 8.5 horsepower output. Despite this change, Honda will continue to sponsor the ride through early 2027, though discussions about future sponsorship are ongoing. Disney legend Bob Gurr, who designed the original ride, revealed in a New York Times interview that the new electric vehicles will employ "a different kind of technology than conventional batteries." Disneyland is currently testing a prototype for the fully-electric vehicle and expects it to be unlike any existing battery-powered car.
